Whiter and Brighter Smile with Dental Veneers

Living with an imperfect smile might cause self-esteem problems and make you feel less sociable and happy in life. Many cosmetic dental procedures are available to enhance your smile if it is not as perfect as you would want.

Veneers are one of the most effective options. This procedure may be used to repair a variety of smile imperfections, giving you the beautiful, straight teeth you’ve always wanted! They have a natural look and are a cost-effective solution that will provide you years of beautiful smiles. In this article, we will give everything you need to know about veneers.

What are veeners?

Dental veneers are thin, tooth-colored shells that cover the front surfaces of teeth to improve their look. They’re mainly composed of porcelain or resin-composite materials and are attached to your teeth permanently.

Veneers can be used to correct a variety of cosmetic issues, including chipped, cracked, discolored, or undersized teeth. So, even though dental veneers are categorized as cosmetic dentistry because they transform smiles with shapely and aligned teeth- they also have protective properties that eliminate the need for more comprehensive procedures.

Type of veeners?

Porcelain and resin-based composite veneers are the two types of veneers that are usually used in teeth. The sections that follow will go through these options in greater detail.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a durable, thin cap that may be applied to the tops and sides of teeth.  Before attaching them. Although porcelain veneers are the same color as natural teeth, they can even be whitened to enhance the smile and give it more sparkle!

Resin-based composite veneers

Resin-based composite veneers are just similar to porcelain veneers, however they are less costly and need less enamel removal. When the composite veneers are cracked or damaged, it is typically easier to repair than the porcelain veneers.

Are veneers and crowns the same?

Both of these procedures are frequently mistaken as interchangeable terms. However, veneers are not the same as crowns or implants. Veneers are thin shells that cover the front of the teeth. Implants, on the other hand, are tooth replacements that replace the whole tooth. Veneers simply cover the front surface of the tooth, whereas crowns surround the entire tooth- which is visible with a smile.

Initial Assessment

Before you get your veneers, you need to first visit here at Ampong Dental for a consultation to determine which options are best for you and how many veneers you need. At this point, our dentist will most likely take X-rays to assess the health of your teeth. We will examine your teeth for symptoms of decay, gum disease, or the need for root canals.

Tooth Preparation

Before taking a mold (impression) of your teeth, our dentist will trim down roughly a half-millimeter of your tooth, removing the enamel using a grinding tool, to acquire the correct size for your veneers. This mold is then delivered to our laboratory, where your veneers will be created. It usually takes one to two weeks for your veneers to arrive from the lab after our dentist creates your mold.

Placement

You can now schedule a veneer placement appointment once your veneers are ready. Our  dentist will assess the fit, shape, and color of your veneers during this visit to ensure that they are ideal for you. Your teeth are then thoroughly cleaned. This is important because it prevents bacteria from accumulating under the veneer and causing deterioration.

Lastly, our dentist will use dental cement to adhere the veneer to the tooth. Ultraviolet light will be used to solidify the cement quickly, and your new smile will be ready to go when you leave the clinic!

How to take care of your veneers after they’re placed?

Unlike other dental procedures, the recovery time after placing the veneers doesn’t take a lot of time. Instead, when the veneers have been cemented in place and any anesthetics have worn off, you can eat and chew normally as you were. However, be careful not to chew on your cheeks or tongue while the anesthetic is wearing off.

Traditional porcelain veneers have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, whereas composite veneers have a lifespan of 5 to 7 years. Taking basic measures can help ensure that they have the longest possible lifespan. These precautions include:

  • Avoid chewing hard objects, such as pens, ice, or even your fingernails.
  • Never use your teeth to open packaging or condiment packets, we know you have the habit to do so!
  • Avoid chewing with your front teeth. Try eating  harder foods only with your back teeth; to make this possible, chop up hard foods like chocolate bars- easy.
  • Get a splint or retainer to preserve your veneers if you grind or clench your teeth at night.
  • If you play sports, you must use a mouth guard to protect your teeth.

Are dental veneers right for you?

Veneers are the ideal option for those who have their natural teeth but wish to improve their overall look. But, remember that it will not replace your missing teeth, in that case, dental implants are the best option available for your dental health and for your general health.

Additionally, removing a lot of enamel from your teeth is not a reversible process. Before determining if veneers are the best option for improving your smile, it’s important to consider your overall health and condition.

This cosmetic procedure may not be an option for you if you suffer from gum disease, weak enamel, or unhealthy teeth. Furthermore, people with bruxism, or unconscious teeth grinding, and malocclusion may not find veneers to be a good cosmetic option. Constant grinding, clenching, or agitation can cause your veneers to break off.
